Everything you need to know about China Post

China Post, officially known as China Post Group Corporation, is the state postal service company of the People's Republic of China. It is a state-owned enterprise directly supervised by the State Post Bureau, which is responsible for the overall oversight of China's postal services. The State Post Bureau is subordinate to the State Council of China. China Post's international services include small parcels, large parcels, and EMS. China Post's small and large parcels can be tracked if registered. Based on the mode of transport, they are divided into three categories: air parcels, sea-air combined (SAL) parcels, and land parcels.  China Post airmail/parcels are the most popular due to their low cost and convenience. EMS is faster than China Post but more expensive. Average delivery speed depends on the service type and trade and communication links with the destination country of the goods or parcels. For example, regardless of the service type, delivery time from China to the United States is approximately 19 days. China Post is China's main postal service provider, responsible for the delivery of parcels and mail within China and internationally. Most parcels delivered by China Post originate from various e-commerce platforms, especially AliExpress.

What are the parcel classifications of China Post?

China Post's international services can handle small parcels, large parcels, or express delivery (EMS Epacket). Parcel classification depends on their specific weight and dimensions:

Package Weight:

  • Any package weighing less than 2 kg is considered a small package.
  • Any package weighing between 2 kg and 30 kg is considered a large package.

It is important to note that some countries have weight restrictions for large packages.

  • Parcels sent to the following countries/regions have a weight limit of 20 kg: Australia, New Zealand, Portugal, Italy, Greece, Austria, Netherlands, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, South Africa, Norway, Belgium, Russia, Brazil, Argentina, Malaysia, India, Chile, Egypt, Ukraine, Thailand, Indonesia, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, and the Philippines.
  • Parcels sent to Poland have a weight limit of 15 kg.
  • Parcels sent to Singapore have a weight limit of 40 kg.

Packaging Dimensions:

  • Packages weighing no more than 30 kg must meet the following dimensions: length less than 1.5 meters, width less than 3 meters.
  • Packages weighing no more than 20 kg must meet the following dimensions: length less than 1.05 meters, width less than 2 meters.
  • The minimum dimensions of a package must meet the following requirements: length greater than 0.24 meters and width greater than 0.16 meters.

How long is the delivery time of China Post?

Delivery times offered by China Post can range from 7 days to 3 months, depending on the size and weight of the package, the destination country/region, and the urgency of the shipment. Please note that package size affects delivery time, as larger items have lower priority and may take longer. Packages sent via China International Air Parcel and China Land-Air Parcel services typically guarantee delivery within 5 to 30 days. Land-based parcels, however, can take up to a month or more to arrive.

Estimated delivery times for various delivery methods are as follows:

Air Parcels:

  • To neighboring countries of China: 5-10 days
  • To Europe and the United States: 7-16 days
  • To Latin America: 10-20 days
  • To Africa and other countries or regions: 15-30 days

In general, regardless of the destination country/region, air parcel delivery time is 15-20 days.

Ground Parcels:

Regardless of the destination country/region, delivery time is 1-2 months.

ePacket packages:

Delivery to the United States takes 10 to 20 days. Delivery to other countries/regions may take longer, as packages need time to reach the appropriate processing facility before reaching the customer.

However, unforeseen circumstances such as changeable weather conditions, holidays, customs inspections, and incorrect recipient contact information can cause delivery delays or even extended delays.

How to track your China Post package?

If you want to track the shipment of your postal parcel, you first need to obtain its tracking number. China Post staff will provide you with the tracking number after filling out the shipping label. When registering mail with China Post, every parcel is assigned a unique tracking number. This number corresponds to the Universal Postal Union's S10 standard (consisting of 13 symbols), begins with two letters, is followed by nine numbers, and ends with either "CN" (Mainland China) or "HK" (Hong Kong).

  • Tracking number formats are as follows:
  • Registered airmail: begins with "R"
  • ePacket: begins with "L"
  • Seamail or regular mail: begins with "U"
  • Seamail or unregistered mail: 11-digit number
  • China Post EMS: begins with "E"

Please note that if the tracking number ends in CN, it indicates the goods were shipped from mainland China; if it ends in HK, it indicates the goods were shipped from Hong Kong.

China Post offers several ways to track your parcel. You can check it through the official website or through a third-party logistics agent like ChinaDivision. Note that if your parcel is an international parcel, some tracking numbers are internationally recognized, such as Universal Postal Union tracking numbers, which can be tracked until delivery.  Some tracking numbers are not applicable in the recipient's country/region, requiring tracking via notification from the local post office or phone call from the courier company, especially for packages shipped through e-commerce platforms such as AliExpress and eBay. In these cases, we recommend using a third-party logistics agent for easy package tracking. As a comprehensive package tracking platform, ChinaDivision provides integrated package tracking solutions, particularly for e-commerce sellers. Our API enables easy batch tracking and provides synchronized information to consumers, among other features.

However, regardless of the method used, please be sure to follow these basic steps for accurate tracking:

  1. Obtain your tracking number: This is a unique code provided when your package is shipped; please keep it safe.
  2. Visit the China Post tracking website: Enter your tracking number on the official China Post website to view status updates.
  3. Understand the status updates: Read notifications such as "In Transit" or "Delivered" to know where your package is.
  4. Use third-party applications: For more features, try using applications that integrate data from different carriers.
